Get to know our Australian visitors
Australian visitors to WA are broken up into two key markets, those visiting from WA (intrastate) and those travelling from across Australia (interstate). To help understand both domestic markets, Tourism WA have developed fact sheets which provide insights into how much they spend, how many nights they stay, who they are, what they like to do when they arrive, as well as planning and booking insights. These fact sheets are based on the National Visitor Survey and will be updated shortly with data from the Domestic Tourism Statistics collection.
Domestic spend cannot be reliably reported prior to 2025 due to the change in methodology for measuring domestic tourism and is therefore only shown for 2025. See the Tourism Research Australia website for more info on the methodology change.

What types of trips do Australians take?
In 2022, Tourism WA commissioned Roy Morgan to conduct a study based on trips taken by Australians to better understand this important visitor market. The resulting data was divided into six segments and these trip types help inform our marketing efforts. Beyond identifying the six trip types, we have profiled the target market for each trip covering demographics, psychographics, and media consumption. The additional profiles help define who is most likely to take these trips, interstate or intrastate travellers.

A Premium Nature trip is a high-activity immersion in untouched nature offering unique, premium experiences.
Luxe culture
A luxury escape typically staying at 4 or 5 star hotels and resorts, focusing on restaurants, shopping and arts and culture.
City social
A city social trip is getting together with friends and having a good time, soaking up the nightlife and city energy.
Simple nature
A simple nature trip is a holiday in nature to relax, escape distraction, and reconnect to the simple things.
Family time
A family time trip is a family holiday usually on the coast, often returning to favourite destinations.
Relax & Recharge
A relax & recharge trip is a quick getaway in between longer holidays, focused on relaxing and spending quality time with a partner.
