Western Australia is divided into five tourism regions -
Experience Perth
Australia's Coral Coast
Australia's Golden Outback
Australia's North West
Australia's South West
Tourism WA conducted a regional review in early 2003 which sought to rationalise the structure of the tourism industry, reduce fragmentation and overcome duplication of services.
As a result, the New Concept for State Tourism was introduced in 2004 and heralded a major shift in the way tourism was administered, funded and marketed in Western Australia. The most significant development was the reduction of ten regionally-based tourism marketing organisations to five new Regional Tourism Organisations (RTO's) that are not for profit, fully incorporated bodies each with a board of industry members.
The RTO's have formal contracts with Tourism WA that transfer to them full responsibility for intrastate marketing of their respective regions. Their primary responsibility is to increase visitation to the region by marketing the destination to the intrastate market but also become involved in selected interstate and international marketing.
As of 2006-07, the five RTOs have been funded to the total value of $3.25 million to carry out these responsibilities. Each RTO works closely with Tourism WA to leverage all niche development and marketing strategies, and align marketing activities with Brand WA to ensure consistency.
The partnership between Tourism WA and the five RTO's continues to strengthen and is actively contributing to tourism in WA growing faster than the national average.
