To develop the industry's potential, investment is required in infrastructure which can support the different segments of the cruise market.
To attract major international cruise ships, investment is needed in large scale cruise passenger terminals. Considering Western Australia's isolation and the seasonality of this market, the investment returns may not currently justify major investment in this area, beyond that which already exists.
The development of infrastructure to facilitate the growth in the small scale 'expedition' cruising and charter industry is warranted, however, and will assist WA in developing its reputation as a world-class, nature-based cruising destination.
Recreational boating is a significant activity for intrastate tourists who travel to coastal destinations for offshore fishing and cruising. Per capita boat ownership in WA is the highest in the world. There are several areas of the state that are experiencing heavy boating pressure on existing boat launching facilities, which appear inadequate to service the demand.
The Department of Planning is the key government agency responsible for building and maintaining marine infrastructure facilities.
