Facilitation Process

Tourism WA can provide tourism development and investment support including:

Cross Government Introductions

In order to fast track a project through the approvals process, Tourism WA can provide a cross-government introduction service. When other government agencies are involved, Tourism WA can highlight issues that need addressing and furthermore arrange introductions to those agencies having jurisdiction on certain matters. Examples include meetings with providers of water (Water Corporation), power (Synergy and Alinta) and telecommunications (Telstra).

Local Government Planning

Local government support is integral to having a tourism project proceed to the approval stage i.e. approval of a Development Application for a project to proceed. Tourism WA can, where appropriate, provide written support for a project.

Local governments are also involved with associated infrastructure such as the provision of roads, boat ramps, parks and car parking.

Tourism WA can also facilitate meetings between a developer/investor and the relevant local government, especially if issues arise that may result in undue delays.

Organisations Integral to Planning in Western Australia

In Western Australia the major organisations involved in the planning/development process include:

  • Department for Planning and Infrastructure: which considers how a development complies with planning schemes, strategies and regulations and impacts on services such as power and water;
  • Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor: which provides liquor licences;
  • Department of Environmental Protection: which considers the impacts of developments on the environment;
  • Local governments: which consider a broader range of issues including community concerns, compliance with local regulations and the impact of the development on surrounding landholders.
    Local governments usually need to approve any applications for a tourism facility.
