Tourist road signage needs to be carefully designed and implemented to ensure directional signage is effective and that road safety is maintained to the highest degree. Effective signage must also be of assistance to the visitor.
The tourist signage guidelines below were developed by Tourism WA in conjunction with Main Roads WA to address the issues of safety, aesthetics and compliance with national industry and road authority standards.
Directional roads signs should contain the name of recognised tourist attractions, services and facilities.
The tourist signage guidelines do not apply to advertising, informational and interpretative signs in road reserves – these are solely controlled by Main Roads WA.
Applications for, and enquiries about, tourist directional signs should be made to the relevant Local Government.

Tourist attraction signs
Tourist attraction signs cover such areas as:
- Commercial tourist attractions
- Natural attractions
- Wineries, breweries, distilleries
- Aboriginal heritage
- Historic sites and towns
- State tourist drives.
Tourist attraction signs are only available to establishments recognised as being of significant interest to tourists and meet the essential assessment criteria. The core business must be tourism based with a strong commitment to service visitors.

- Accommodation facilities
- Visitor information
- Tourist radio.
